Lake District Road Trip itinerary

A Lake District road trip is less about distance and more about timing. The best roads are narrow, steep and busy in peak season, so this four-day itinerary keeps daily mileage modest while linking the classic passes, lakes and villages.

Duration
4 days
Distance
180 miles
Start and finish
Windermere circular route
Best time
May, June and September are the most reliable months for a road trip. Avoid the steep passes in poor weather, ice or heavy traffic if you are not confident on narrow roads.

Return north through the western Lakes, then enter Borrowdale for Derwentwater, Seatoller and a Keswick overnight.

Day 4

Honister, Buttermere and Ullswater

Cross Honister Pass to Buttermere, then loop back via Whinlatter, Thirlmere, Kirkstone or Ullswater depending on conditions.

Planning tips

Keep mileage low

Thirty miles can take much longer than expected once you add parking, single-track roads, walkers and viewpoints.

Know when to avoid Hardknott

Hardknott and Wrynose are steep, narrow and exposed. Skip them in ice, fog, heavy rain or if your vehicle is large.

Start early for parking

Popular villages and lakeside car parks fill quickly in holidays and sunny weekends.

Lake District Road Trip FAQ

Can you drive around the Lake District in one day?

You can see a small section in one day, but a proper scenic road trip is better over three or four days.

Are Hardknott and Wrynose Pass safe to drive?

They are legal roads but challenging, with steep gradients, bends and single-track sections. Use an alternative if conditions are poor.

Where is the best base for a Lake District road trip?

Windermere, Ambleside, Keswick and Coniston all work well. Splitting nights between south and north Lakes reduces backtracking.
