Aberdeenshire & Moray road trip

North East 250 itinerary

The North East 250 is one of Scotland's most varied short loops, pairing Cairngorm mountain roads with castles, whisky country, fishing villages and the Moray Firth. It is less remote than the NC500, but the best version still needs time for detours and slower scenic roads.

Planning tips

Book distilleries ahead

Popular Speyside tours can sell out, and drivers should plan tastings responsibly or arrange transport.

Treat it as a loop of regions

The route works best when you give each region a clear day: Deeside, Cairngorms, Speyside and coast.

Watch winter road conditions

Cairngorm roads can be affected by snow and ice outside the main touring season.
