5 days South West Coastal 300 itinerary

Day 1

Dumfries to Kirkcudbright

Start on the Solway side with Sweetheart Abbey, coastal villages and an overnight in Kirkcudbright or nearby Castle Douglas.

Day 2

Kirkcudbright to Portpatrick

Follow the Machars through Wigtown and Whithorn, then continue around the Rhins toward Portpatrick.

Day 3

Mull of Galloway loop

Spend a slower day around the Mull of Galloway, Logan Botanic Garden, lighthouse viewpoints and beaches before returning to Portpatrick or Stranraer.

Day 4

Portpatrick to Galloway Forest Park

Head inland through Newton Stewart and Glentrool, using the day for forest drives, lochs and dark-sky viewpoints.

Day 5

Galloway Forest Park to Dumfries

Return via New Galloway, Thornhill and the Southern Upland roads, finishing back in Dumfries.

Planning tips

Do not skip the inland section

The coastal villages are the obvious draw, but the forest park roads make the loop feel complete.

Plan around garden opening times

Logan and other gardens are seasonal, so check opening dates before fixing your overnight stops.

Use it as an NC500 alternative

This route is better for relaxed touring, easier roads and shorter driving days than the far north of Scotland.
